A biography about the life of legendary New Zealand pilot, deer farmer, business entrepreneur and Warbirds enthusiastic, Sir Tim Wallis, is to be launched at Wanaka on 4 November 2005.
Written by Dunedin author Neville Peat (www.nevillepeatsnewzealand.com), the biography, titled Hurricane Tim – The Story of Sir Tim Wallis, describes the dramatic – arguably heroic – career of one of southern New Zealand’s most colourful personalities.
“Sir Tim approached his flying, his wild deer recovery and his business initiatives with whirlwind-like energy, and despite a near-fatal head injury in a vintage Spitfire fighter plane 10 years ago, he still keeps active and frequently travels around New Zealand and overseas from his base at Wanaka,” says the author.
“His story is inspiring. He was at the forefront of the New Zealand deer industry and the live capture of red deer in the rugged bush and mountain environment of southern New Zealand through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. He broke his back in a crash in 1968 and walked with one leg in a steel calliper thereafter but he never let that disability stop him pushing the limits of flying or seeking new ways of doing business in farming and tourism.
“A born entrepreneur, he has gone into the deer business in countries as far apart, geographically and culturally, as Russia (southern Siberia), Vanuatu and Canada. His expertise in wild animal capture was in demand from countries such as the United States.
“In the past 20 years he has collected World War II warplanes and since 1988 has displayed them at the phenomenally successful airshow Warbirds Over Wanaka.”
Neville Peat says the 330-page, strikingly-illustrated book, published by Longacre Press in Dunedin, is brimming with adventure, drama, humour, and never-say-die audacity.
